Did a little date night with my love at Cibo, which we've been wanting
to try for a long long time. Delicious bruschetta, great salad
(including roasted potatoes), & the greatest cheese on a pizza (pretty
good capers, salmon & arugula too) made for a pretty good night. I
love having K as my partner, my best friend and my (so soon to be)
wife for the rest of our lives.

I love the opportunity I get to be in community with other people. We
do a little bible study Thursday morning at 6:30 at Sola Coffee Bar
and we're studying Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology. It's intense
and I learn A LOT about the bible from there.

There's nothing like having the right tools to take a bike apart and clean it up.

Going without

I've learned a lot these past few weeks about me and about my spiritual walk.

And one of the ways it began was by trying to save money on our (my roommate and my) cable bill. We decided to get rid of the DVR and the digital channels so we had to change out the cable box. That box ended up not working with our TV setup and we got really busy the next few weeks, so we were without TV for about 4 weeks.

Not having TV readily available was refreshing. No Sportscenter during lunch. No easy way to just sit and zone out. No House at night. No sports during the evening. That forced me to read more during lunch and to find ways to be productive at night. That meant reading and spending more time with God.

It's been a forced change of behavior that has resulted in a long desired change of heart. I know it is my mission as a man to be the spiritual leader for my future wife and this "No TV" has really emphasized that. It's allowed me to spend more time in the Word and more time realizing how lucky I am to have her and the countless other blessings God has bestowed to a sinner like me.

My idea for this post is to encourage you to do without sometime to see where your heart really is. What is that?

High School Football

I went to a high school football game tonight with a group of guys, one who works at the high school where we enjoyed a really great game. During the game I got to thinking of why I didn't play football in high school and the only true reason I could remember was that I got hurt in middle school football and was scared to go to a bigger stage.

I wonder how life would have been different if I had tried out to play football, but honestly the more important thought that crept into my head is to question why I should be scared of anything.

God is my protector as well as yours and He will sustain us. Instead of worry, we as believers should all run to Him. Easier said than done, but with practice (much like football or lacrosse), you get better and perform at our best. In this case and in many more, I need to glorify Him.

Men's Group

I feel COMPLETELY blessed to be in the Mens Group that I am in on Thursday mornings at 6 in the AM.

These past 4 weeks we have entirely immersed ourselves in the chapter on Prayer from Wayne Grudem's book, Systematic Theology. Through our time together, it's really inspired me to pray more and pray better. I think really putting yourself in a situation where you can focus on nothing more than God takes you to a place where it becomes the conversation.

I am really needing work on listening to God and by getting out of my room (where I work at home from) and outside into the heat and making myself get down on my knees, it puts me into His perspective and His mindset. Christ died for me and I wouldn't even get on my knees? It's sad but true. Luckily He has grace beyond what we, especially I, can comprehend. I will try to be better about my praying, but if/when I fail, He will catch me and I have my guys in the group to keep me accountable.

By the way, meeting at 6am is insane. It allows for great discussion because you're barely awake, your mind and heart are going 100mph and the majority of the guys are all sorts of jacked up on caffeine. Try it twice. You'll be hooked.

Learning About Myself and God in Situations

It's amazing the things it takes us to learn what we need to know from God.

For my example here, I turn to my recent car wreck. I had a beautiful "Hyper Blue" 2006 Mini Cooper S with only 25,900 miles on it. I babied that thing. I cherished it. It was my first car I was buying with my own money. And then on August 5, 2009, a 20 year old (or so) kid pulled out in front of me when I was doing 45-50, and I had no time to stop or swerve. I hit him and I hit him hard. Airbags deployed in both cars.

Nobody was hurt that bad, which I am forever grateful for, but certain circumstances lead up to that in which nobody is to blame, but it did make me curious to know why exactly it happened. How was God going to use me in this situation or how will he teach me.

The car teetered on being totaled or not... then I got a call.

"Your car had $19,000-$20,000 worth of damages"

Woah.

Searching for over two weeks for the "PERFECT" car, I found an older Mini that wasn't exactly what I was thinking of getting.

After buying that "Jet Black" 2005 Mini Cooper S with 46,000 miles on it, I've figured out that I do not need the best of the best for the material possessions I have and "need". I have also figured out that living without a car payment is a very good way to live, especially for someone about to get married.

Now the next step is that I am wondering if I failed in how God wanted me to speak with the guys that pulled out right in front of me. Or if I missed the opportunity to share Christ's love with the fresh-behind-the-ears college grad that came to pick me up for my Enterprise Rent-a-Car. But who am I to know? It's all in God's game plan and I will do the best I can with what I have... even if I don't have what I used to think was "the best."

I am forever grateful that He is so full of Grace. For I have failed over 1,000 times and will do so in the future, too.

I'm reading a book called The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer and one of the chapters describes that God is perfect and never has to learn, never has to evolve, because if He did, then He would not be perfect.

It is so interesting that our society is completely self-wrapped in the idea that change is the absolute solution. I think we are all in for an interesting ride. When and how will the "change" become the "absolute"? Change.gov? Absolute.gov? Perfect.gov?

Time will tell. God doesn't need time or change or anything else, but we need Him.

Here's a thought for you.
Have you ever seen Blues Clues? Have you ever seen Blues Clues on a Monday and then seen the same one the following Wednesday? Yes. That's right. They play the same darn episode 5 times in a row. Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. and Friday. But kids love it. They learn from the moment they start watching and it makes them feel good. By Thursday or Friday they are able to answer the majority of questions the program brings up. Heck, I need to watch it to boost my confidence sometimes. (Man, they save a TON on production costs)

I wonder if I don't need the same thing for my studies in the Bible. If I were exposed and taught the same message five times in a row in one week, I think I would be a lot more able to remember and apply what I have heard and understood. By why do I not?

Kite Runner

I went to Scottsdale to be with my girlfriend for New Years (Hey!) and upon leaving Arizona, I had a long flight back to Charlotte. Katelin had read and loved the book "The Kite Runner," so I borrowed it to occupy my time for 3.5 hours in the air. I was not disappointed. It was captivating and truly well-written. I read 300 pages into the 375 page book during the flight and even though it was fiction, I enjoyed seeing a mental image of the tough realities of people living outside the US, especially in Pakistan, etc.
It makes you appreciate the safety and security you have in the US. What types of problems do we have? We eat too much. In overseas places, these people see more tragedies in a week, nay, a day than we ever will in a lifetime. While we complain about paying over $3 for a gallon of gas while we sit in line for a $4 cup of 16 oz coffee, they are fighting for their lives, just to survive for the next sunrise. Ridiculous. And I am just as guilty as anyone else of taking for granted what God has blessed me with. I pray that He gives me the ability to truly appreciate and understand the richness that I've got instead of allowing my greediness to prevail. I bet you He will find a way...

So back when I was younger I loved summers cause that meant the neighborhood pool. And the neighborhood pool meant the diving board.

The best part was going for double front flips. Cause you knew you had to go for it and if you went less or doubted it it was going to hurt. And you jumped. There is the water. There is the sky. There is the water again. There is the sky again. And you landed it. BOOM. You made it. Freggin good feeling. And then you go and do it again cause that was fun.

It's just fun to do what you don't think is entirely possible. And then kicking that thought to the ground.

Who am I kidding about seeing the water and sky twice - closes my eyes and let it fly...and enjoyed the ride.

Running

I went running last night. With her.

I enjoyed it because it feels good (and I got to go with her), but I hate it because it is just so boring to me for some reason. Maybe I just need to power through it. Maybe I can just utilize the iPod shuffle a little more. Maybe I can just see the benefits of being able to run everywhere I go instead of just lifting weights at home (believe it or not). Maybe I need a few more pieces of sweet gear to encourage me to run. If I were to buy new running shoes and shorts and stuff I would need to use it right? It is not absolutely horrible to go running, but it just seems like it takes sooooo long. Did you notice I enjoy the complaining too? What would I talk about then?

One thing I do like, though, is the soreness. It is just a feeling of being alive when you have soreness in your calves and thighs. I am all about that. It makes sleeping better because not only are you mentally worn out from work, you are equally physically worn out.

I've got friends that train for half-marathons, marathons, triathlons, and Iron Man Triathlons. And I complain about 20 minute jogs. It's bad. But then again, it is a good way to stay in shape because I travel so much and can't afford the opportunity to carry a bike around with me everywhere. So maybe running will grow on me. Then I will enjoy 2/3 portions of triathlons. Cause swimming laps is ridiculously more boring (and tough) even more so than running. Don't get me started...

Luggage

I arrived in Phoenix yesterday to come early for the race this weekend, allowing me time to see my girlfriend that lives out here. I had been in Fort Worth, TX Saturday, flew back to Charlotte that night and then flew from Charlotte to Phoenix, AZ on Sunday morning. Needless to say it was a long weekend of traveling.

So I arrive without my bag. Awesome. I file the report, ask a ton of questions, waste a lot of time. Oh well. They tell me the next flight arrives at 7:30 and to expect it then. I call later. The guy tells me the plane is delayed until 8:23 and to expect a call at 9:00 or so. No call. Who knows where my bag went. I had to get a toothbrush for the evening.

I get a call this morning from some strange number.

"Hi this is Peggie, I have your bag."

"Where are you?"

"Yuma - it's about 3 hours from Phoenix"

"Awesome."

The bag is in Phoenix right now...scheduled to be delivered between 2 and 6. It flew back on it's own (like a little child) from Yuma to Phoenix. Apparently I had been helping people get their bags off the bag claim...and I helped this lady with my bag. And for some reason I didn't see my bag. I think I may have been sleep walking in the airport.
